Local Heroes: Tomlin Scoops, Cougars Topple Bullitt East, Eye State Title

Bowling Green, KY — The Conner Cougars 7th Grade Football team made program history Saturday evening, defeating the Bullitt East Chargers 21-8 in the Kentucky Middle School Football Association (KMSFA) State Semifinal at Bowling Green High School. The victory sends the Northern Kentucky Youth Athletics squad to its first-ever state championship appearance.

The Cougars, composed of students from the Conner High School class of 2031, relied on a strong defensive showing and timely special teams play. Offensive and defensive lineman Jack Tomlin delivered a standout performance, blocking a punt and later forcing and recovering a fumble from the Chargers’ quarterback before rumbling 71 yards for a touchdown.

Offensive and Defensive Lines Coach, Mike Crum praised Tomlin saying, "It's hard to appreciate  exactly how much that one young man influenced the game. It's got to be some sort of all-time performance for any DL in the region, especially during the occasion of the state playoffs. I’m blessed to have the young men to coach that I have. It ain’t me (creating the success), it’s them. I love it for them."

Head Coach Adam Clifton praised his team’s determination, saying, “These boys showed heart, discipline, and unity. To see them fight for each other and make history for our program is something truly special.”

Director of Football Cory Franklin credited the players’ preparation and mindset. “They’ve trusted the process all year. From day one, this team believed they could compete with anyone in the state,” Franklin said. “Tonight, they proved it.”

Northern Kentucky Youth Athletics President Travis Nipper highlighted the broader significance of the victory. “This is a proud moment not just for Conner but for all of Northern Kentucky,” Nipper said. “These young athletes represent the best of what our community stands for—commitment, teamwork, and resilience.”

With the semifinal win, the Cougars advance to face Somerset in the KMSFA State Championship Game. Kickoff is set for Saturday, November 15, at 5:00 PM at Lexington Christian Academy, where the Cougars will look to capture their first state title.
